Nick Clegg is new Liberal Democrat leader
Wed 19th Dec 2007
Nick Clegg has been elected as the fourth leader of the Liberal Democrats. In a close contest he beat Chris Huhne by just 511 votes. Nick won by 20,988 votes to 20,477, with 50.6 per cent of the vote. In his victory speech Nick spoke of his renewed ambition for the party, saying he wanted the Liberal Democrats to reach out to all those who share our instincts and our values but don't yet vote for us. "We want to change politics and change Britain," he said. He said he believed liberalism was "the thread that holds together everything that this country stands for". Previously, in a short speech, Chris Huhne said he looked forward to being part of Nick's team. He praised Nick's energy and intelligence, and said he was convinced that Nick would take the party on from strength to strength.

New youth shelter for Claydon
Thu 22nd Nov 2007
A new youth shelter was officially opened at the Claydon and Barham recreation ground, on 22 October when Liberal Democrat County Councillor John Field cut the red tape. It will provide a solution to concerns raised by the local youth, the police and the community about providing a safe place for young people to gather and socialise. The Youth Shelter was funded by Mid Suffolk District Council, the Police Authority's Partnership Fund and County Councillor John Field's Locality Budget. "The design and location of the youth shelter was chosen by the young people in consultation with the Youth Service, the local Parish Councils and the Recreation Ground Committee", said District Councillor Martin Redbond, a member of the Claydon and Barham Youth Support Group. Whilst the County Council's Youth Service is minimising its future activities in Claydon due to a lack of financial resources your District and County Councillors intend to work with the local community to make sure that there is adequate future provision for young people in the area.

"Liberalism in Britain has lost a great champion, the Liberal Democrats, a great advocate and our public life, a great servant. "
Lord Paddy Ashdown
In memory of Lord Richard Holme, who died on 5 May
"If the Tories want to claim that they are going to cut corporation tax, they have to come clean about how they are going to pay for it. Cutting the main rate of corporation tax to 25% will cost more than £5bn a year. If David Cameron is to have a hope of sounding credible he must state clearly where the money will come from. Otherwise this will be seen as yet another unfunded tax cut. "
